I opened Blue House Books as a pop-up bookstore in 2017, and since then, Blue House Books has become a staple in our community. I am a lifelong book lover and have found so much joy in sharing that passion with my community for the last 8 years, now as a brick-and-mortar storefront in our downtown community. I have my Master's Degree in book publishing, which gave me an insider's look into the industry as I opened a bookstore. Although I never expected to be a business owner, by running pop-up events and getting to know my community, I learned that Kenosha was hungry for a bookstore, and I also realized that I much preferred being out in the public, chatting with readers, meeting authors, and being involved in my community to being stuck in an office at a publishing company. All this led me to believe that quitting my full time job, pursuing the bookstore full time, and investing in a storefront was absolutely the right move, and I have not regretted that decision for one moment!

What is the disbursed date?

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
There are some 0% interest loans on Kiva, including all direct loans in the United States. To learn more about the interest rates Kiva borrowers pay, you can review the "Average cost to borrower" field on a loan profile.

Blue House Books is an independent bookstore in downtown Kenosha, Wisconsin, just blocks away from the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan! We operate in a thriving small business community filled with shops, restaurants, museums, and nightlife.
As an indie bookstore, of course Blue House Books sells books and gifts, but we do so much more than that! We hold several events a month, including free book clubs and children's story time, author events, workshops, collaborations with other businesses, and so much more! We also help lead community events, contribute to local fundraisers and sponsorships, and do whatever we can to support our downtown community and our city!
Blue House Books began as a popup bookstore in 2017, and since then we have opened a small brick-and-mortar store in 2020, and after only a year moved to a larger space in 2021! While operating as a pop-up bookstore, I learned that Kenosha was hungry for a bookstore and ready to support another small business, and at the same time, I was learning that I was ready to quit my corporate job and much preferred being out in the public with fellow book lovers to being stuck in an office. With the support of my family, I took the risk, quit my full-time job, and opened Blue House Books full time, and I have not regretted that decision for one moment!

What is the purpose of this loan?
A Kiva loan will help pay for our expansion! Another retail space has become available in our building, and we plan to take it over and use it as a designated event space. While we already hold several events a month, we are limited by our small store. Any events take space away from shopping, so we are stuck with holding events in the evening after normal shopping hours, or moving offsite which takes away the opportunity of additional sales and requires us to charge for events that we would rather keep free in order to pay an offsite venue.
By having this designated event space, we can host more events at the store and allow community members to use the space for meetings or private events. Additional income from private events would allow us to host more public events for free, which is a top goal of ours.
This loan will allow us to pay for a portion of the expansion without taking out a high-interest loan from a bank. This will relieve a potential financial burden, and contribute to that mission of keeping as many events free as possible for our community!
