A loan helped a baker bring a community-based eastern-european bakery to Madison, Wisconsin!

Natalia's story

I grew up in a multi-cultural household, I was born in Russia but my family was from Azherbaijan, Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia. I grew up with people who celebrated togetherness and food. Russia's streets are made up of lively cafe's with people dancing to folk music, people eating a relaxing afternoon cake in the park and friends gathered after work to catch up next to a plate of cookies. I was first trained as a lawyer but, being surrounded by a culture joining community and food, it didn't take long for me to become a baker. I taught myself how to bake and was inspired by my families lineage, I learned how to make dishes from baklava to marble cake. My hobby became so big, that it was no longer a hobby: it was a calling. I opened my bakery that flourished for many years before my family immigrated to the United States.

Moving the Madison, Wisconsin, my kids have a school they love, my family is flourishing and I am now studying to become certified as a lawyer in the United States. I have been here for close to a year, and I have not been able to find any cafe or bakery that sells anything close to the flavors that I am used to. I also find that a lot of people don't go to cafés in the afternoon to talk and be together. This is the perfect opportunity to share a piece of my culture with Madison - I look forward to seeing you all there!
