A loan helped a Kenya-born, Chicago-made coffee company invest to diversify its sources of revenue.

Leecox's story

I was born and raised in Eastlands in Nairobi, Kenya. Nairobi, is the melting pot of Kenya's more than 40 different ethnic groups and my whole life I was immersed and neighborhoods with different kinds of accents and background. My own parents were from two different tribes and as such multiple languages were spoken in my household.

Nairobi was also a city bustling with entrepreneurial spirit. From the age of 5, I was involved in all sorts of ventures alongside my mother and siblings, just to make ends meet. From selling mandazis (Kenyan Beignets), selling second hand shoes and clothes, providing academic support to students that needed it. I did it all. I of course didnt think of it as a business back then, I though of it as survival coz times were difficult.

Years later, I graduated as a computer scientists from a liberal arts college in Michigan, completed grad school and started a job as a consultant. In every city in the U.S I found myself working from coffee shops, inevitably I found myself connecting with strangers over a cup of coffee. Lifelong friends in some cases, prompted simply by sharing a table. 'What if I could create a company that placed building connections over an amazing cup of coffee at the core?' I kept thinking to myself.

The seeds of Kikwetu Coffee Company have been planted throughout my life. Entrepreneurship was taught by mom, unwittingly as we struggled to make ends meet in Eastlands of Nairobi. Learning to celebrate differences in people was taught throughout my life path - the different ethnic groups in Nairobi, different races in cities in Michigan, Chicago and all the places I have worked and lived. Most importantly, the quest to create something that makes a difference. Something that unifies people. Something that has excellence at the core.
