A loan helped bring a bookstore back to Superior, Wisconsin.

Maria's story

Hi, I'm Maria and I love books. Growing up in rural Douglas County, books allowed me to explore new worlds and served as a gateway to new ideas, all from the farm where I lived. Visiting the Superior Public Library was a wonderful treat, and I ordered dozens of books at a time through the mail. When I made money babysitting or haying, it was invested in a growing library of books, comics, and graphic novels.

As a mom of 7, I read nightly to my children and watched them develop that same joy of reading. We were regular library patrons and purchased many books at Scholastic book fairs and book stores, expanding our imaginations together. My youngest is now 17 and we enjoy sharing our favorite books with each other, finding new gems to savor and discuss together.

I've been living in Superior for more than 30 years, and have been a reporter with the local paper for almost 25 years. I love this community. And I want to open a bookstore for them. Although Duluth, Minnesota, which is right across the border from us, has at least four independent book stores, Superior has none. Our last bookstore, JW Beecroft, closed in 2007. I've been waiting ever since to see a new one come in, but it hasn't happened. Superior deserves to have a bookstore. We've been waiting long enough.

I didn't expect to be the one to do it. I signed up for a local business program thinking they wouldn't accept me. My idea was just a dream. But they did accept me. They believed. I've been networking with other entrepreneurs and tapping into local business resources through the program. I feel like I'm close to bringing Superior and Douglas County a bookstore of their own.
