A loan helped a family-owned vintage shop hire employees to expand hours.

Melissa's story

I am co-owner of Handsome Hound Vintage and Thrift with my husband, Tom. I am from Washington State, and I have a background in Art. I earned a Art History, and have also been a creative-type, working in visual arts since I was a small child. I also have a Master's in Education.
I have always had a deep curiosity for the past, especially as it has been expressed artistically through visual arts, fashion, music, etc. My first memories where I felt a sense of wonder, awe, and mystery were rummaging through my grandma's house, looking at the antique items, and asking for the stories behind them. It makes sense that I have ended up in this industry, and I come to it with a lot of other experience, including some teaching, retail management, and many, many years of customer service. I deeply enjoy the "treasure hunt"; finding amazing, fun, interesting items to put in the shop, and researching these items to better understand where they came from.

Tom is from Chicago, and he went to school in Indiana, where he earned a degree in Environmental Studies. Tom is a musician, skater, and former clothing brand owner, with an effervescent personality.
Tom and I started Handsome Hound as a booth, travellng to various flea markets. After a number of shows, and some very positive feedback from customers, we decided to open a brick-and-mortar.

Currently, we have been a business for a year. We have grown immensely as business-owners, and we are so fulfilled to be doing something creative with our time. We love bringing vintage fashion to the community and seeing what they do with it. The community is one of the most important aspects of our work, and it is important to us to put smiles on faces.
