A loan helped local small business operator to get back on track and continue to support local families.

Sergio's story

My name is Sergio, and I was born in Mexico. Because my parents immigrated to the United States in search of a better future for me, I grew up with my uncles and aunts. My childhood was filled with great friendships, and my friends became more like brothers. We stayed together during elementary, middle, and high school before going separate ways. I went off to college to become a better person, and our group stayed in contact. Some friends moved to bigger cities in Mexico while some went to America. After graduating from college, I found that there were little job opportunities in my field. One of my childhood friends was in the U.S. and invited me to follow him. I soon left Mexico and immigrated to the United States, finding my new home in Boston. Moving to another country presented challenges, since the environment, language, and social life were different than my experiences in Mexico. I wanted to follow my dreams of opening a restaurant - this required sacrifice, patience, and hard work. I started off washing dishes in a local restaurant and then transitioned into the hospitality industry for more than 30 years. After waiting decades to achieve my dream, I opened own restaurant. Although there have been challenges, particularly since I opened the business during COVID-19, I have faith that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I will make it through.
