My husband, Mauricio, and I started our business, Fresh Personal Chefs, when we were living in Mexico awaiting Mauricio's legal papers to get to the United States. We were able to support ourselves there but ended up selling the business to a friend when we left. Once stateside, we started Fresh Personal Chefs in Door County, Wisconsin, where we have steadily grown over the past 6 years. Mauricio is the cooking talent behind the business, as he has loved to cook his whole life and has many years of restaurant kitchen experience. I do all the coordinating, managing, and marketing for the business.
We make a great team and love planning and preparing delicious dinners and events for people; it's part of who we are as a couple. Our food backgrounds run deep - in fact, we met at a restaurant! (I was a server, he was a cook. The rest is history!) We love the food industry and feel we have found a perfect fit for our lifestyle and interests.
We have two kids, ages 13 and 15, which is why we both continue to work full-time jobs while our business grows! We are eager to take our business to the next level to support our family and work fully for ourselves, as well as include our kids in the business as we grow.

Fresh Personal Chefs is a small personal chef business that caters to the residents and tourists of Door County, WI. We cook delicious meals in homes and vacation rentals, which give our clients a special of a kind experience. Many of the people who book our services are multi-generational families on vacation or small groups who book for special occasions. We are not a large catering company, but we fill a niche in our area. My husband is an experienced chef who cooks in our clients' homes or rental kitchens. We specialize in intimate dinner parties and events of 50 or fewer people.
My husband, Mauricio, and I decided to start the business because we wanted to work for ourselves. We both have years of experience in the food industry and have, between us both, worked at restaurants, coffee shops, bars, catering companies, and banquet halls. Our passion and interests lie in preparing excellent food for people while giving them unique experiences. We knew we could give people the best of what do in the food and service industry.
So, when we had a major transition in our lives and moved back to the United States from Mexico in 2015, where we had started our personal chef services, we were excited to get our business going in Wisconsin! We started out small and continue to expand. Our client base grows each year and we have many repeat customers booking dinners with us!
What is the purpose of this loan?
We are applying for this loan to take the next step in growing our personal chef business. We were granted a $5,000 Kiva loan in 2016 when we started up and it helped us to become established and grow at a rate that worked for us.
After 6 years, we now want to take another step and offer mobile event services. We bought a food trailer last year with the help of family members; this felt like a natural extension of the business. Our plan is to have a semi-permanent food vending space and to also book off-site events. We already have four events booked for the summer season, just through word of mouth, and before any advertising. My husband and I are looking forward to adding larger events to our already growing food business. This loan will help us purchase needed kitchen equipment, catering supplies, and also put money towards new marketing strategies -which will highlight all of the exciting growth happening with our business.

What is the disbursed date?

"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.

"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.

Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
