Kana's story

I was raised in a community very similar to most low-income urban area. While, there were a few grocery stores, most folks spent their limited funds on cheap food, junk food and fast food. I was no different. I eat mostly healthy meals at home, but the rest of the time I eat foods high in sugar, salt and fat. Even as a vegetarian most of my diet consisted of carbs and cheese. One great thing came out of being the only vegetarian in my family, however, I learned how to cook and prepare my own meals. 20 years later I am still in love with food and cooking.

I developed a passion for health, nutrition and the healing arts while living in Brooklyn, NY and participating in afro-vegan culture, community gardens and food/ land justice organizing from 2007-2011. I learned how many chronic conditions we suffer from are closely linked to diet. I moved back home to the Bay Area in 2011 during the peek of the financial crisis. Dedicated to plant-based living, sustainability, economic freedom, and above all health, I decided to start Healing Kitchen from my home kitchen in West Oakland. Today I am a La Cocina SF Entrepreneur, UC Santa Cruz Certified Farmer and Executive Chef for Healing Kitchen. I truly believe that the two greatest impacts I can make are creating meaningful employment and ownership opportunities for members of my community and continuing to serve quality food that's both healing and delicious. I look forward to using this loan to make my vision a reality.

This loan is special because:

It helps a female entrepreneur serve sustainably-grown, plant-based global cuisine to the Bay Area community.
