Kaitlin's story

I grew up in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. As I child, one of my favorite after school activities was exploring the pantry for ingredients and then finding a recipe in one of my mom's cookbooks that I could make with those ingredients. My creations were always full of substitutions, and I loved to see what would come out of the oven if I mixed a different combinations of ingredients together and then baked them. Sometimes, the results were inedible, but once in a while I’d make something that I thought was delicious and also completely original.

In addition to baking, I also enjoyed starting small businesses. One of my favorites was a hair clip business in 7th grade. It started when I took a pack of plain bobby pins I had sitting around and painted them using my mom’s craft supplies, adding glitter, flowers, and other girly embellishments. I brought my creations to school and sold them to the other girls in my grade and took custom orders for different color combinations. There was even a competitor business that sprang up selling a less expensive version of my clip.

I attended law school in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Washington, DC to work as an attorney. As I began my legal career, I also really started to explore my passion for healthy cooking and baking. After four years of practicing law, I decided to turn my full attention to starting a food company, making delicious and healthy food for busy people. I started working on CHIQS in the Fall of 2014 and launched the business out of Union Kitchen in Washington, DC. In the months and years to come, I hope to grow the company and expand access to healthy snacks in the city and beyond.
