A loan helped to buy raw materials like metal sheets and clay liners and carry out a marketing campaign.

Francis's story

I grew up in an environment of poverty in a village in Mbeere, Embu county. My parents could not afford to give us the basic needs and we struggled to make ends meet. I dropped out of school to help my parents in meeting the basic needs of the family. I started to do odd daily jobs to earn some wages. I attached myself to an artisan at the local shopping center to help him out as i learn metal work and welding. It took 3 years of apprenticeship, then i decided to relocate to Mombasa and start my own business in welding and metal work. I started my business with ksh.2000 savings i had made. I bought 10 ceramic liners and scrap metal and borrowed the tools and equipment from an artisan that operates at the Sparki Juakali shed to make my first stock of Improved cook stoves. The following day i moved around residential areas of Mombasa to hawk my products. Now i have a business premises and manufacture and sell over 1500 units in a month with a value of over ksh 70,000. I have a dream of owning a company manufacturing energy saving products.
