Partner description:
iDE Ghana is part of iDE, a U.S.-based, non-governmental organization that focuses on the manufacturing and distribution of affordable, scalable products for low-income communities. iDE Ghana developed a clean hygiene project to establish new, affordable toilets in rural, northern Ghana.
Currently, the vast majority of rural Ghana does not have access to improved toilet facilities. Hygienic toilets significantly reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, which lead to severe illnesses and high healthcare costs. iDE Ghana believes that it is a basic human right for all people to have access to a hygienic toilet.
A unique lending approach:
iDE Ghana will use Kiva financing to build out their sanitary toilet program throughout rural Ghana. This program provides low-income families and communities with an in-kind loan, in the form of the toilet itself versus money, to increase health safety.
They are committed to making their products affordable to their customers. One way iDE Ghana does this is by training their manufacturers to become salespeople to their communities, avoiding middle-man costs and empowering workers with a new skill set and additional income. iDE Ghana’s loans are provided with 0% interest, but there is a fee that goes to the salesperson.
