Approved to post Kiva loans from: Myanmar (Burma)
There are 12 million farmers in Myanmar who make up more than a third of the labor force. The majority of these farmers lack access to formal credit that fits their needs. This results in a huge unmet demand for rural, small farming loans.
Proximity Designs is a non-profit social enterprise that offers loan products to help small farmers increase productivity. Proximity Designs also develops and distributes agricultural technology to rural farmers. The organization has a national distribution network that reaches 80% of the rural population.
A unique lending approach:
Proximity Designs offers loans to farmers with small landholdings, averaging about six acres. The loans help finance the purchase of irrigation processes, seeds, tools, small equipment and labor.
Proximity Designs offers its loans through Village Lending Groups (VLGs) who assist loan officers in each village with customer selection, loan disbursement and collection. The average VLG includes 48 members.
