Partner Description:

Hluvuku's mission is to improve the socio economic conditions of the population in the Maputo province and contiguous areas, providing sustainable services to low income people, considering the viability of the initiatives. Hluvuku's vision is to play a key role in expanding access to financial services in the Maputo province.

The Matutuine district has a very low population density, of approx. 6.5 inhabitants per square kilometer, and was severely affected by the civil war. It also has a high incidence of the HIV/AIDS virus.

Hluvuku-Adsema wants to attain operational and financial self-sufficiency developing a legal framework and also the technical skills of its workers aiming the introduction of savings products in the local market.

Status update — November 7, 2019

Hluvuku-Adsema (a Mozambican NGO) has established a wholly-owned subsidiary called Microbanco Confiança (Trust Microbank) to operate its microcredit activities. Microbanco Confiança (abbreviated MBC) is licensed as a Rural Microbank by the Central Bank of Mozambique. Under Mozambican regulations, as a microbank, MBC will able to start collecting savings. Hluvuku-Adsema's team has passed to MBC, and additional team members have been hired in order to comply with application regulations, as well as to handle operations. As a subsidary of Hluvuku-Adsema, MBC continues to espouse the social mission of its parent NGO.

Status update — September 2, 2010

Hluvuku-Adsema's delinquency rate increased to 32.1% on August 1st, 2010. Since that date, Hluvuku-Adsema has been delinquent in remitting funds to Kiva. As of September 2, 2010, their delinquency rate on Kiva is 48.3%.

Portfolio staff are continuing to follow up with Hluvuku-Adsema, and hope to receive the expected payment soon. In the meantime, Hluvuku-Adsema's fundraising status has been changed from “active” to “paused.”

Once this payment has been received and distributed to Kiva lenders, Hluvuku-Adsema will be unpaused and their delinquency rate should fall to a rate that reflects the amount that borrowers have yet to repay.
