A loan helped a member to increase stock and expand her product range in her roadside stall.

Kangaroo Group's story

Nyadzisai is the Chairperson of the Kangaroo group, which consists of four hardworking and committed women. They attended all the training sessions as required by Thrive and got their first loan this month, which they believe will improve their businesses. Nyadzisai is a widow aged 56, her husband died 10 years ago and she has been struggling to provide for her children alone through harsh economic conditions. Nyadzisai has been a vendor since the death of her husband and she sells beverages, confectionaries, airtime and other small items.
In the early stages of her business, she was operating a gate side stall but in 2010, she managed to move to a roadside stall along a busy road, which is commonly used by buses that ferry people to and from the capital city. She also managed to attend a cake baking class and now she bakes cakes for birthday parties, weddings and other events. She says that her business has enabled her to pay school fees of her children. As a group, they are applying for a combined loan of $1150 payable in six months and Nyadzisai wants to use her portion to increase the stock at her stall as demand is high were she is situated.
