A loan helped a member to build a container to hold charcoal.

Salome's Group's story

Salome's group is comprised of 2 hard working women. Salome is 19 years old and lives in the town of Nansana in the Kampala East region of Uganda. She is single and has one child who is currently in school. For the past 2 years, Salome has been working hard to manage her small business where she sells bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes and charcoal.

To help expand her business, Salome has requested a loan of 800000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to build a container to hold charcoal, and will help Salome to generate greater profits and pay school fees for her child. Salome hopes that in the future she will be able to own a retail shop with a lot of inventory of goods like sugar and salt.

Salome is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
