The “Amigas de Tosagua” (Friends of Tosagua) communal bank meets every fifteen days in the city of Tosagua. This place is known for being very dynamic where most of its residents work in farming and animal husbandry; it is a zone with much vegetation.
We met Rosa, 25, in this place. She’s a single mother of three children, an 8-year-old, a seven-year-old and a two-month-old baby; the two older ones attend school. She’s been in the communal bank for five years and likes it because of the help the loans provide since she’s getting ahead alone with her children.
In order to get ahead with her family, our friend has a home-based grocery store where she sells all types of products like rice, sugar, oil, detergent, legumes, vegetables and fruit. She works every day from 6am until 8pm and sometimes even later; her children help her with her work. She tells us that this is how she gets ahead and she likes it because she can help her children with their homework there and even more can care for her littlest one who needs much care. She’s been in this line of work for 8 years and thanks to it neither she nor her children lack anything.
She will use this loan to better stock her store. She will buy rice, sugar, oil, detergents, cured meats and other basic staple items. She’s been in the communal bank for five years and likes it because of the help she always gets from the group. Her goal is to continue moving forward and that her children never lack anything.
