Sandra's story

Sandra, age 33, lives with her spouse and two children, ages 2 and 8. They live in the Soledad municipality, home of the butifarras (specialty sausages). Soledad is located 15 minutes from Barranquilla.
Sandra works to improve her clients' personal and professional images by offering haircuts, massages, hairstyling, manicures and pedicures, and hair treatments. She learned to do this so that she could open her own business and generate an important income for her family. She has been doing this for six years in a space that she outfitted herself in her own home. Her first customers were her neighbours, family and close friends. They still go to her, and refer more clients her way every day. Now, her business' potential to grow has exceeded what she is able to do on her own; her clientele is growing every day, so Sandra's need for working capital is becoming more and more evident. The money that she currently has is not enough to meet her customer demand, especially now that the most important holiday season is coming up: December. For this reason, she has turned to a Kiva loan. This is her first loan with the Fundacion Mario Santo Domingo. With this loan, she will purchase beauty products in order to stock up on the tools that she needs. This will allow her to offer a good service. She will also buy varied merchandise, such as costume jewellery and women's accessories; these are her most popular products. This is her business' busiest season.
