A loan helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Buyanzi Combine Group's story

Greetings from Buyanzi Combine Group in Western Kenya! This will be the third planting season that several of these farmers have had with Kiva partner One Acre Fund.
Caleb is the facilitator of the Buyanzi Combine Group. He takes care of six children at home. He joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Caleb had a very good maize yield harvesting fourteen bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Caleb was only able to harvest four bags of maize on half an acre of land.
With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Caleb and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit, and insurance.
With income from maize sales, Caleb will invest in business assets and livestock. In 2012, the members of Buyanzi Combine Group will each plant between half and one acre of maize.
Caleb is pictured in the photograph with his group members.
