A loan helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Sikulu Multi Purpose Group's story

Receive greetings from Sikulu Multi Purpose Group in Western Kenya! Dorcas is the facilitator of the group. This group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Dorcas takes care of five children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to have additional maize profits to educate her children, access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for her family. In the recent 2011 season, Dorcas had a good maize yield harvesting eight bags on 1/2 acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Dorcas was only able to harvest four bags of maize on 1/2 acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Dorcas and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from her maize sales, Dorcas will educate her children and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Sikulu Multi Purpose group will each plant between ½ and 1 acre of maize.

She is pictured in the photograph with her group members.

In this group: Dorcas, Boaz, Felix
