A loan helped a member to buy a sewing machine and more cloth.

Sumayah's Group's story

Sumayah's Group is comprised of five hard-working women. Sumayah is 19 years old and lives in the town of Kyengera in the Kampala North region of Uganda. For the past 10 years, Sumayah has been working hard to manage her tailoring business, which makes adjustments to clothes and also makes clothes from scratch.

To help expand her business, Sumayah has requested a loan of 400,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy a sewing machine and more cloth, and will help Sumayah to generate greater profits and buy food to feed her family. Sumayah hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business.

Sumayah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Sumayah's future prospects by helping her to start her business.

In this group: Sumayah, Annah, Aisha, Deborah, Saudah
