Roxana, twenty-three years old, is a young and entrepreneurial woman who began taking on family responsibilities at an early age and has managed to move forward through her own efforts. She is married and the mother of two children, aged fourteen months and three years. Roxana has nine years of education and did not continue her studies due to lack of interest. Her husband works as a construction laborer.
For the past ten years, Roxana has been dedicated to buying and selling traditional clothing as a street vendor within her community. In addition, she makes and sells tubes for fireworks, with the help of an employee. Roxana is requesting a Kiva loan to purchase a greater variety of traditional clothing and take advantage of the year-end season. Roxana’s goal is to continue strengthening her business and, in the future, have a store where she can display her garments.
There are seven Maya Kaqchikel women from the department (state) of Sacatepéquez who formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Poderosas Realhuit.” The “Microcredit Plus” program allows women to participate in monthly trainings on business management, health, family matters, and women’s issues. Business management skills are essential for the success of their businesses, which include selling traditional clothing, plastic baskets, running a tortilla shop, hairdressing, and making tubes used for fireworks.
Roxana says: “Thank you, Kiva lenders, for supporting women in Guatemala.”
