Las Flores Del Jardin Group's story

Thirty-one-year-old Lucia married when she was twenty-three and is now the mother of two children who are three and seven years old. She only attended school for three years, and because she was the second oldest of seven siblings, Lucia had to stay home and help her mother with housework. When she was fourteen, she began sewing a variety of clothing on an industrial sewing machine. She decided that she could open a sewing business and bought her own machine. She has had the business for seven years, and her husband assists her.

Lucia shares that she has two sewing machines and can deliver one hundred fifty pieces each week! Her goals are to increase her income to create a better life for her children. She states, “I want my children to be professionals. I could not do it because I had to take care of my siblings. I am determined to make life better for my children.” Lucia requests her second Kiva loan to buy a large roll of fabric so that she can sew jackets for the cooler months ahead.

Lucia was elected Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Flores del Jardin” by six Maya K’iche women who live in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan. Many of them sew casual clothing or raise pigs. They appreciate monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education (health, women, family, business), and bi-monthly healthcare services (exams, consults, family planning).

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your generosity!
