A loan helped to buy more traditional outfits in different colors and designs.

Griselda Beatriz's story

Maya women have proudly worn their colorful traditional textiles for centuries. Styles change throughout the years just like fashions from around the world. The current style is to decorate blouses/”huipiles” with all kinds of shiny decor. Thirty-two-year-old Griselda, a mother of three children ranging in age from five to twelve, started selling complete traditional outfits eight years ago. Five years ago, she added another business making ornate aprons, blouses, skirts, and purses that she sells by custom order and as a street vendor. During busy times of the year, Griselda has an employee to assist her. Her goal is to move the business into its own space. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy more traditional outfits in different colors and designs. Her income, combined with that of her husband, who works in a laundromat, will support the continuing education of their children.

Griselda shares that she only attended school for six years, but could not continue because there were no funds. She recently joined the Friendship Bridge “Bridge to Success” program and looks forward to meeting with a Facilitator online or in person every fifteen days. The Facilitator will share targeted training with Griselda, help her identify goals, and create an action plan. This educational experience will help Griselda take a huge step toward a brighter future.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for helping Griselda empower herself!
