A loan helped a member to buy ingredients for her recipes and utensils for cooking.

Estrellas De Alotenango Group's story

Ruth, twenty-three years old, is a married woman and the mother of one child, who is two years old. Despite having studied only nine years, due to low family income and abandonment by her parents, Ruth hasn't given up, and she started to work in stores and farms in her community  to help in the house. Three years ago, she started her own business selling food, offering lunches three times a week and snacks in the afternoons on the other days. She sells her products by order and delivered to houses, counting on the support of her husband, who helps her with the deliveries when he has available time. With a Kiva loan, Ruth plans to buy ingredients and utensils, such as a blender, mixer, and large pots, which will enable her to improve the quality and quantity of her preparations. Her goal is to enlarge her business and to open a formal sales location, so that her clients can enjoy her food in a comfortable space.

Ruth is part of Friendship Bridge's “Estrellas De Alotenango” communal bank, which is made up of eight women who speak the Spanish language, from the Department/state of Sacatepéquez. They work selling food, tortillas, firewood, textiles, and woven belts. They participate in monthly meetings, where the women make their loan payments and, afterwards, a facilitator offers trainings as part of the “Microcrédito Plus” program.
