The entrepreneurial spirit of rural women reflects effort and self-improvement. Natividad is sixty years old, a married woman and mother of six children (aged 19 to 36). Four of them are married and have given her seven grandchildren. Although she only completed six years of schooling, her parents, with nine children, lacked the resources. For sixteen years, she has been selling traditional foods such as tamales, chuchitos, and enchiladas on the street. She also raises free range chickens, which she sells from her home, and eight years ago, she expanded her business to sell new casual clothing with the support of her daughter.
With the Kiva loan, Natividad will buy ingredients and new clothing to keep her business stocked. Her goal is to increase her income and begin raising chickens and pigs, seeking a better quality of life for her family.
She is the president of the Friendship Bridge Community Bank "Luz Divina," made up of eight Spanish-speaking women from the Department of Suchitepéquez who raise pets, sell food, repairs, and make clothing and catalogue products. These women participate in the "Microcredit Plus" program, which offers loans, monthly educational training, and bi-monthly health services. These two additional services are essential to their success as women, mothers, and entrepreneurs.
