A loan helped a member to buy a bull and feed for her animals.

Agua Tibia Group's story

Catalina is 49 years old. She raises bulls and chickens as a form of earning a livelihood and bettering herself. For over 20 years she has been earning a living with this business which she operates with endeavor at her house and the local market, generating income to support her family. She is a widow and mother of three children aged 11, 14 and 28 years old. Two of them are students. Catalina is also the grandmother of three grandchildren. She was only able to study through to 2nd grade at school, but this has not impeded her from getting ahead with dedication and constant work. With the Kiva loan Catalina wants to buy a bull and feed for her animals. Her goal is to increase the number of her cattle and consolidate her business. Her plan is to ensure greater income and a more stable future for her family.

Catalina was elected as treasurer of the  Friendship Bridge's communal bank “Agua Tibia” in the department/state of Quetzaltenango. The group is made up of another seven women and the majority have the same business as Catalina. Other women sell chicken by the pound, mill corn and have convenience stores. They attend monthly meetings where the women make payments on their loans and then a coordinator provides training as part of the “Microcrédito Plus” program. The subjects include information about business, health, family and woman.
