A loan helped a member to buy coffee and stock her grocery store.

Negociantes El Quetzal Sp Group's story

Virgilia, 49, is a widow and is the mother of 6 children, aged 9 to 25.  She is a model of perseverance.  Two of her children are still in school, in the 2nd and 6th grades.  The oldest children completed 9 years of schooling.  One of her children is married, and she has one grandchild.

Virgilia did not have the opportunity to go to school, but this did not prevent her from working to get ahead.  For 4 years, she's had a business buying and selling coffee.  She acquires green coffee at wholesale, and sells it dry in the region with the support of her children.  She also opened a convenience store in her house a year ago.

To strengthen her businesses, Virgilia is requesting a Kiva loan to buy coffee, consumer staples, beverages, and snacks.  Her goal is to keep her store stocked, tend to her customers, increase her income, and ensure a more stable future for her family.

Virgilia is a member of the Friendship Bridge communal bank "Negociantes el Quetzal SP” in the departament and state of San Marcos.  This group has 6 other women who have the same type of businesses as Virgilia.  Others sell traditional food and products through a catalog.  Virgilia participates in the monthly meetings where the women make their loan payments and later, a facilitator provides training as part of the “Microcrédito Plus” program. The themes of this program include business, health, families, and women.
