A loan helped empower rural women through heritage soap-making while launching farm glamping experience.

Lois's story

I'm Lois, and at 72 years old, I'm just getting started on the most important work of my life. I was born and raised right here in Southern Illinois on land my family has called home for generations, where my grandmother Della taught me to make soap from scratch in her farmhouse kitchen when I was just five years old. Those Saturday afternoons watching her work weren't just childhood memories—they were lessons in entrepreneurship, patience, and the kind of care that turns simple ingredients into something precious.

I've spent decades watching our small rural town struggle as opportunities disappeared and young families moved away seeking better lives. But I refuse to believe our best days are behind us. This land still has so much to give, and the women in our community have talents and dreams that just need the right chance to flourish.

Starting Bone + Bear Farms is my way of turning Grandmother Della's kitchen wisdom into real economic opportunity for women who need it most. One of the things I cherish most about this business is I'm working alongside my son Joshua, who brings culinary expertise and big dreams, while I contribute a lifetime of community connections and the determination that comes from knowing your neighbors deserve better.

We're creating a place where families can pick flowers and stay in glamping tents, but more importantly, where local women—especially single mothers—can learn traditional soap-making skills that help them build their own businesses.

What motivates me every single day is the vision of women in our community discovering they can build something beautiful with their own hands, just like Grandmother Della taught me all those years ago.
