A loan helped to buy more sewing machines, thread, and other raw materials for clothing.

Virginia's story

Thirty-nine-year-old Virginia, a single Maya K’iche mother raising two children, who are eight and twelve years old, has four years of formal education. She works hard being a seamstress, raising chickens, and selling eggs so that her two children can continue their education in primary school.

Fourteen years ago, Virginia opened her sewing workshop and sells sports clothing, sweatshirts, and skirts she sells by custom order. She can deliver six dozen pieces of clothing, thanks to the assistance of her employee. Two years ago, she started raising chickens and selling eggs from her home in the department/state of Totonicapan. She requests her second Kiva loan to buy more sewing machines, thread, and other supplies. The national holidays or “fiestas patrias” are coming up. She wants to have plenty of inventory on hand.

Virginia joined the Friendship Bridge's ‘Bridge to Success” program because she is motivated and determined to learn to manage her businesses effectively. She meets with a facilitator, either in person or online, who helps her identify goals and create an action plan. This targeted training is essential for her success. She is learning about budgeting, planning, savings, prioritizing expenses, and the best uses of her time. She also learns about pricing and customer service.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for helping Virginia reach her goals!
