A loan helped a member to buy basic merchandise for her store, including eggs, bread, snacks, and beverages.

Estrellitas De La Cumbre Group's story

Thirty-three-year-old Wilma, a mother of two children who are six and thirteen years old, has managed her convenience store for eight years in a rented space. She also raises chickens that she butchers and then sells by the pound in her store. Her husband and teenage son assist her in serving her customers.

Her goals are to enlarge her store, add inventory, and earn more income. She requests her fifth Kiva loan to buy basic merchandise for the store, including eggs, bread, snacks, and beverages. Some of her income will be earmarked for the continuing education of her children, who are in the third and sixth grades.

Wilma is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Estrellitas de la Cumbre”. There are seven other Spanish-speaking women in the group who live in the department/state of San Marcos. These ladies sell second-hand clothing, corn tortillas, chicken by the pound, or manage their convenience stores. At their monthly meeting, they participate in interactive educational training, as part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Topics range from effective business management practices to hygiene, nutrition, and health. Often, the women share what they learn with family members or friends. The training is essential to their success since they had limited educational opportunities as children and are eager to learn as much as they can to empower themselves.
