A loan helped a Nebraska glass artisan purchase supplies in the pursuit of her custom art.

Alktra's story

I’ve loved art since childhood, drawing from my imagination with the colors and paper my mother gave me. I studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad before war displaced us and later discovered glass painting in Syria through a UN refugee program. Now in Nebraska, I’ve turned that lifelong passion into a small business, hand-painting decorative pieces inspired by my culture and surroundings. Each piece I create carries a story of resilience, migration, and creativity across borders.

Art has always helped me adapt and rebuild through difficult transitions, from Iraq to Syria to the United States. My business allows me to share joy, culture, and beauty with others while also supporting my family. Every time someone tells me they’ve gifted or displayed one of my pieces, it reminds me why I never gave up. Teaching children at community events and seeing their excitement also fuels my commitment to grow and share this passion more widely.
