Getzemani Patzutzun Group's story

Cristobalina is a gifted thirty-year-old artist, married to a farmer, and raising two children who are six and seven years old. She attended school for five years and then worked in a tortilla shop/ “tortilleria” because she needed to earn income for the family. Ten years ago, she opened her business making invitations for every occasion, as well as paintings. Her goals are to enlarge the business and establish a formal business where she can attractively display and sell her artwork.

Cristobalina is one of seven Maya Kaqchikel women who live in the department/state of Solola, and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Getzemani Patzutzun”. These ladies farm vegetables, raise livestock, or weave/embroider traditional textiles. They look forward to monthly meetings where they catch up on news, make loan payments, and participate in educational training (business, health, family, women) part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare. Every other month, a visiting nurse comes to their community and offers many services, including exams, consults, and family planning. Cristobalina and her friends appreciate these “plus” services because they have little or no formal education, and healthcare is challenging or impossible to access.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to these women. They are very grateful!
