A loan helped a woman-owned business grow native plants to nurture people and wildlife in her community.

Carly's story

I grew up with a horse and no TV. I spent countless hours outdoors, enjoying Florida’s spectacular plants and wildlife. In college, I was assigned to read Ray Anderson’s “Confessions of a Radical Industrialist.” Mr. Anderson owned a carpet manufacturing company, and he recognized that carpet production was arguably one of the most polluting industries at the time, as well as very resource intensive. He decided to demonstrate to his competitors that it is possible to do business in a way that does not harm the environment—and can even help it—all while turning a profit.

This conviction that doing the right thing is not only prudent but can be profitable stayed with me, and when I was introduced to the native plant industry, I immediately realized how it could benefit the environment on a large scale. I resolved to heed Mr. Anderson’s lessons and create a business that proves how native plants can be a boon to both the environment and the economy.

Today, demand is exceeding supply, and there is an urgent need for more native plant production. I would like to seize the opportunity to expand my business to help fill this need.
