I’m Heather, co-founder of Ember Movement Studio in Chattanooga. Ember isn’t just a fitness space - it’s a homegrown dream born from resilience, reinvention, and a deep love for helping others feel better in their bodies.
Movement has always been central to my life. I trained in classical ballet from a young age and spent years both performing and teaching. Over time, that passion evolved into a love for yoga, fitness, and mindful movement - something more sustainable, empowering, and aligned with how I wanted to live and lead.
Before stepping fully into the wellness world, I built a career in hospitality - working my way up from hostess to general manager, eventually overseeing fine dining programs and managing events. That experience gave me the tools to create welcoming spaces and lead with both structure and heart.
Yoga and fitness became not just what I did, but who I am. For nearly 20 years, I’ve taught classes, led teacher trainings, managed studios, and helped people reconnect with their bodies in powerful ways. I’m also a single mom and self-made entrepreneur who has worked hard to build a future rooted in wellness, strength, and community - for myself, my son, and others.
My co-founder, Kelly, also comes from a movement background. She began in the performing arts and eventually built thriving wellness, fitness, and arts communities on the East and West Coasts. After receiving eating disorder treatment in 2021, she shifted her approach to movement - embracing body awareness and holistic care. Then, in 2023, Kelly experienced sudden cardiac arrest. Overcoming these challenges and managing newfound heart conditions increased her drive to create wellness spaces for self-empowerment and creative movement. Her recovery brought her to Chattanooga, where our paths aligned.
When the former studio we worked at closed without warning, we were faced with a choice: walk away or build something new. We chose to build.
Together, we created Ember Movement Studio - not just as a place to work out, but as a place to come home to yourself. Our offerings include HIIT, strength training, yoga, aerial arts, circuit classes, pole fitness, and holistic wellness services like massage and bodywork. Our mission is rooted in inclusion, transformation, and care.

In the case of partner loans, many of our Lending Partners choose to disburse loan funds before the loan request is posted on Kiva. We allow pre-disbursal because it ensures that the funds reach the borrower as soon as they are needed. Loan funds from Kiva lenders then go to backfill that amount and as a lender you assume the risk of the loan. By doing this, our Lending Partners assume the risk that, if the loan isn't funded by lenders, they will have to fund the loan without any funds from Kiva.
If a partner loan is not pre-disbursed, it will be listed on Kiva with an expected "post-disbursed" date. If a post-disbursed loan is not funded on Kiva, there is a chance that the borrower may not receive their loan. Some Lending Partners choose to disburse loans with other sources of funding, while other partners don't have the resources available to fund loans without Kiva lenders' support. No direct loans will be disbursed unless they fully fundraise on Kiva.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
There are some 0% interest loans on Kiva, including all direct loans in the United States. To learn more about the interest rates Kiva borrowers pay, you can review the "Average cost to borrower" field on a loan profile.

A 0.5-star rating means the organization has a relatively higher risk of institutional default, while a 5-star rating indicates the organization is at a relatively lower risk of default, based on Kiva's analysis and the available information displayed in the Lending Partner section of every loan. Lending Partners with the lowest credit tier undergo a lighter level of due diligence and do not receive a risk rating; instead, in places where a risk rating would normally appear, these partners are labeled as “Experimental.” For more information, see "What is an Experimental Lending Partner?"
Direct loans also do not receive a formal risk rating. Instead, these loans are approved through “social underwriting”, where trustworthiness is determined by friends & family lending a portion of the loan request, or by a Kiva approved Trustee vouching for the borrower. Ember Movement Studio is a wellness space we built to feel different from anything else in the Chattanooga fitness scene. We focus on whole-person well-being by combining strength training, yoga, creative movement, aerial arts, and recovery practices like massage and bodywork. We believe fitness isn’t just about pushing harder—it’s about building a relationship with your body that feels empowering, intuitive, and sustainable.
We serve people from all walks of life: young professionals, busy parents, older adults returning to movement, and anyone looking for something more human and creative than your typical gym experience. Additionally, our space functions as a community hub as we continue to add opportunities for co-working, workshops with local practitioners, and partnerships with other small businesses to promote mutual growth and empowerment.
When the business that previously occupied our studio space, with which we were heavily involved, abruptly closed in late 2024, Kelly and I made the decision to start over. We had to create a new LLC, rebuild our systems from scratch, and immediately step into leadership—not just to save the space, but to re-imagine it as something more meaningful. Ember is our response to that challenge. Day-to-day, we run a full schedule of group fitness classes in yoga, strength training, and aerial arts, manage a team of instructors, and create an environment that feels warm, nature-inspired, and community-driven.
Our goal is to expand our offerings, increase class accessibility, and continue developing a space that supports every dimension of health—physical, emotional, and creative.

What is the purpose of this loan?
We’re applying for a Kiva loan to help us grow and stabilize Ember after a challenging and fast-paced launch. These funds will allow us to maintain equipment, such as our treadmills, and purchase new equipment for class expansion. We'll be able to install proper lighting, which will improve both safety and experience for our clients and instructors. Furthermore, in order to keep up with a growing class capacity, we need to purchase more dumbbells for strength training classes and maintenance on existing equipment, such as our treadmills.
Due to a sudden launch, Ember is in need of a marketing push, and these funds will help us get our message out there and to keep supporting the growth of the incredible community we have.
The Kiva loan would give us the breathing room to keep growing Ember with intention—to invest in the details that matter, support our people, and keep creating a wellness space that truly uplifts our community.
Specifically, Kiva loan funds will go toward the following:
- Dumbbells for Strength Training Classes to increase current class capacity (33% of loan funds);
- Treadmill Maintenance (service fees and new parts to maintain the treadmills properly) (17% of loan funds);
- Lighting for Main Room (to enable class expansion and growth) (17% of loan funds);
- Marketing and design costs for three months (Running ads in local publications and online sources; social media ad campaigns) (33% of loan funds)
