Forty-year-old Teodolinda, a mother of three teenagers ranging in age from thirteen to eighteen, shares that she only has a second-grade education. She is married to a bricklayer assistant. Six years ago, she transformed a room in her home into a neighborhood convenience store. Her oldest two children help her with the business. Her goal is to enlarge the store and increase income. She wants to have plenty of funds to continue her youngest son’s education. He is currently in the sixth grade. Teodolinda requests her first Kiva loan to buy basic inventory, snacks, bread, beverages, and charcoal.
Five Spanish-speaking women elected Teodolinda to be President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Las Joyitas”. They live in the department/state of Huehuetenango. These ladies look forward to monthly meetings with a Facilitator who shares educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Topics are very relevant for their lives, and the women look forward to learning how to manage their businesses best, how to use social media to advertise their businesses, as well as information about hygiene, health, nutrition, and self-esteem. A recent topic was about savings.
Loan support from Kiva lenders is gratefully used by these women in their businesses, raising animals, selling fruit, and prepared foods. Thank you, Kiva lenders!
