In Guatemala, girls as young as 14 can marry and start having children. This was the case of Edna, who married when she was around 14 and had her first child when she was 15. She had no formal education.
Edna, who is now 47, had 6 more children who now range in age from 15 to 32. Her older children had a complete education, are married, and she has 12 grandchildren. She is separated from her husband.
Eight years ago, she opened a business selling regional snack foods, tacos, and chickens, as well as shoes. She sells from her home in the department/state of San Marcos. Two of her daughters help Edna with the business.
She envisions opening a restaurant where she can sell pasta dishes. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy more chickens, chicken feed, utensils, and ingredients for her recipes.
“Victoriosas de la Lima” is the name that Edna and six women have given to their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank. Some of these ladies sell catalog products, new casual clothing, as well as shoes. Others have the same businesses as Edna. Since they have little or no formal education, they benefit from a monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Recent topics have been about women’s good health practices, how to be an effective entrepreneur, and the use of social media to advertise one’s business.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Edna and her friends!
