A loan helped this Detroit-based business, 3 Days Juices purchase an NSF‑certified juicer, secure licensing + double output.

Maya's story

I’m Maya, and my husband Bertram and I are the co-founders of 3 Days Juices. I moved to Detroit from Washington, DC in August 2020 as part of Venture for America, an entrepreneurship program that places recent grads at startups in growing cities. I joined with the dream of building something meaningful and being surrounded by people passionate about creating change through business. Just a month after relocating and in the middle of a global pandemic, I met Bertram. Even though we went to neighboring HBCUs (Spelman and Morehouse) we had never crossed paths until Detroit brought us together.

Bertram grew up loving juice (mostly the sugary kind) while I came from a home where we rotated the same few fruits and vegetables. Over time, our love for food became something we really bonded over, especially as we explored Detroit’s local food scene. We’ve always preferred supporting smaller, soulful spots like Baobab Fare, Yum Village, and Good Cakes and Bakes rather than big chains.

In 2022, I got pregnant and we both gained 22 pounds each. The weight didn’t go anywhere, so we decided to make a real change. That same year, during a trip to visit my dad in DC, he made us the best orange juice we’d ever had. He’d recently undergone surgery for prostate cancer and had changed his lifestyle completely, including juicing every day. Inspired by his story, we went back to Detroit, and I asked my friends to help fund a juicer for my birthday. They showed up for me, and we started juicing at home, replacing processed foods with something that made us feel better from the inside out.

That spark turned into something more. We’d already run seasonal TNT fireworks tents together, so we knew we could work as a team. Then in 2023, we attended a business conference that challenged us to surrender our plans to God and trust Him with the vision. That moment reminded me of my first hustle back in college, a profitable mixed drink business that Bertram unknowingly supported as a customer.

Now, we pour that same passion and faith into 3 Days Juices. Bertram’s love for juice helped him hit his fitness goals. Juicing helped me clear my skin and improve my digestion. We’re walking proof that small health choices can lead to real change. What started as a personal reset has grown into a business that’s helping others, one bottle at a time.

Our dream is to expand 3 Days Juices in two ways. First, by growing our cold-press juice line and partnering with gyms, rec centers, pop-ups, and eventually opening a storefront in Detroit. Second, by creating a “juice bar” experience—an interactive, non-alcoholic space where we turn our juices into delicious mocktails infused with natural benefits. We want people to feel good, have fun, and know they’re investing in their health.
