A loan helped a woman-owned company create 2 new women-specific backpacks for long distance and day hiking.

Sarah's story

I founded Symbiosis Gear to meet the gear needs of femme-bodied backpackers like myself. In 2019, while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, I struggled to find a backpack that fit—every pack I tried squished my boobs, limited my movement, or hung too low below my hips. When I reached out to an ultralight gear company with a simple suggestion to make their backpacks work for women, I was ignored. These experiences fueled my drive to build an outdoor gear business that served femme-bodied people.

I’m no stranger to turning ideas into reality. I hold a BFA and MFA in Art & Design, and I’ve spent years as a professional web designer, creative director, and marketer. I grew up sewing clothes, knitting, gardening, and building things—including a house in my teens. Making has always been central to who I am, and Symbiosis Gear is a natural extension of that lifelong creativity.

What motivates me is the belief that everyone deserves to feel strong, comfortable, and included in the outdoors. When gear fits right, it empowers people to stay out longer and go farther. I started Symbiosis to eliminate the discomfort and frustration so many femme-bodied hikers face—and to help shift the outdoor industry toward true inclusion, one well-fitting pack at a time.
