A loan helped a member to purchase fertilizer, chickens to fatten, and natural medicine.

Union La Loma Group's story

Marina, 23 years old, shares that she married very young and is the mother of two children (ages 2 and 4). Although she only received four years of formal education, she understands its importance and hopes her children will complete their schooling in the future. Five years ago, she joined her husband’s business selling natural medicine and growing vegetables. She also has a second business she started two years ago, where she makes a living by raising animals (chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigs) and selling their meat from her home in the department of Huehuetenango, where she lives. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy fertilizer, chickens, and natural medicine. Her goal is to have a large business.

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Unión La Loma” is made up of seven Spanish-speaking women who have businesses in food, chicken meat, fruit sales, natural medicine sales, and vegetable farming. Like Marina, several of them only completed six years of formal education, so they benefit greatly from the monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Recent training topics have included avoiding over-indebtedness, good management, and how to be an effective entrepreneur. Other sessions address women’s issues, family matters, health, and business management. The training is designed by a facilitator who uses images, diagrams, role-playing, and games to share the information.
