Twenty-two year old Eulalia, a married woman with no children and nine years of education, is married to a security guard in the department/state of Alta Verapaz. Three years ago, she started raising chickens and pigs that she sells from her home. She also owns a piece of land where she grows corn. She sells three-quarters of her crop in the local market and the other twenty-five percent for her family to consume. Eulalia employs eight people to clean the corn. Eulalia wants to increase the size of her animal husbandry business and also increase the yield of her corn field. She requests her second Kiva loan to buy organic fertilizer so that she can improve the quality of her corn plants and more chickens to raise.
Eulalia is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Bellezas de Chama”. There are six other Maya Q’eqchi women in the group, and they all are farmers (corn, cardamom) and raise domestic animals and poultry. Eulalia coordinates the monthly meetings, and then the ladies make loan payments. They participate in educational training (business, health, family, women) that is designed by a Facilitator who uses pictures, games, role-playing, and diagrams to share the information. Every other month, the women have access to basic healthcare services delivered by a traveling nurse. She offers all kinds of exams, consults, and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Eulalia and her friends!
