A loan helped a woman-owned, Pittsburgh based granola company purchase equipment to meet increased demand.

Sarah's story

About 15 years ago, I started to educate myself about where our food comes from. What I learned was eye opening and began to completely transform the way that I shop, the way I cook, and the way that our family eats.

I was so inspired and eager to learn more that I went on to study and earn certifications in holistic health and lifestyle, and supporting health coaching clients.

In 2019, I developed a granola recipe to support my clients. It was nutrient dense, seriously delicious, my kids devoured it, and everyone who tried it loved it.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, my service based business took it a big hit and it was time to pivot. The Original granola continued to come to mind, as it was the perfect, convenient done-for-you meal or snack food as we all navigated life with so much more on our plates. This was my pivot!

I kept the recipe gluten free + vegan, swapped inflammatory seed oils for organic cold pressed coconut oil, and sweeten every batch with just a touch pure Pennsylvania maple syrup, keeping each serving to just 3-5 grams of added sugar. In those first few weeks, I produced over 225 pounds of Best Ever Granola out of a tiny 3 home rack oven.

We quickly grew into a shared commercial kitchen space, and in our first year, expanded our products into dozens of markets and cafes regionally, hired a production team, and were recognized by the Good Food Awards for ingredient sourcing, sustainability standards and epic taste.

Today, our products can be found with over 100 retail partners in 10 states. We are growing!

In order to meet continued demand for our products, we are moving into our own production facility just north of Pittsburgh. This will allow us to work out of a dedicated gluten free facility, take limits off of how and when our products are produced, and create space for the company culture that I am excited and honored to continue to grow and nurture.

This move will require financing for equipment, as well as minor renovations to the space. The space and equipment will provide an opportunity to produce our products more efficiently, increasing our production at least 3x, as well as expand our footprint and reach and positively impact the lives of people with real food.
