A loan helped a member to buy fertilizer for the family farm where beans, corn, and vegetables are grown.

Mujeres Luchadoras Sj Group's story

It has been common in rural areas in Guatemala for girls to stay home and help with household chores or work rather than go to school. This is what transpired with Maria who is now forty-one with seven children who range in age from six to twenty-five. She is a grandmother of two! Maria is married to a farmer and Maria works with him growing beans, corn and vegetables. She buys the fertilizer, insecticide and also helps sell the harvest. She also sells clothing including pants, aprons, and shoes from her home.

Maria joined six other Maya Qanjobal women, who live in a rural area in the department/state of Huehuetenango, and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Luchadoras SF". They look forward to their monthly meetings when they share the latest news with each other and participate in educational training, part of the “MIcrocredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare. Recent topics for the monthly training were about the dangers of over-indebtedness and loaning one’s name to another person’s business. Other topics are about health, hygiene, nutrition, the use of social media, and more. Every two months, they have access to basic healthcare services including consults, exams, and family planning services delivered by a traveling nurse who speaks their language and makes them feel comfortable.
