The cool forest environment in the department/state of Quiche is perfect for growing the aromatic spice, cardamom. Actually, Guatemala is among the top exporters of cardamom in the world.
Thirty-three year old Marisol started growing cardamom on her own farm 15 years ago. She employs two people to help her collect and clean the harvest. Marisol sells by custom order to different consumers in other areas. She is pleased with the results of her efforts, which enabled her to add a second business: raising laying hens and pigs that she sells from her home.
Marisol is married, but her husband had to leave to work in the United States one year ago to help support the family. They have four children who range in age from three to fourteen and all attend school.
Marisol wants to improve the quality and quantity of her cardamom harvest and requests her second Kiva loan to buy seeds and biological pest control products. Her goals are to help support the household and bring a higher quality of life to her children.
Seven women, including Marisol, have formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, Flor de Monte Maria. Most of them are also farmers while others have convenience stores. They appreciate participating in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (health, family, women, business) and bi-monthly health care services (consults, exams, family planning).
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness in funding these essential loans!
