A loan helped to build a larger chicken coop and buy chicken to increase her flock to meet demand of eggs and poultry.

Monica's story

Monica is a resilient and hardworking widowed mother of four children, living in Eldoret. As the sole breadwinner, she juggles feathers and finances to ensure her kids’ education and well-being. Monica runs a poultry farming business, clucking away at challenges with unwavering commitment. Despite the pecking order being tough for a single mother, she stays determined to hatch a better future for her family.

Monica is requesting a loan of 35,000 KES to purchase additional chickens and build a larger coop, giving her birds more room to stretch their wings. Limited space has been her biggest egg-cracking problem, restricting her ability to meet the soaring demand for eggs and poultry. She plans to increase production, boosting her income and her family’s nest egg. The profits will sustain her household and allow for further reinvestment into the business.

Monica's poultry farm provides affordable eggs to the community and local suppliers and occasionally creates job opportunities. Having repaid her previous ECLOF Kenya, Kiva's field partner's loan, she’s ready to fly higher with this new opportunity, turning her chickens into golden geese for her children’s future.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase supplies and agricultural equipment.
