A loan helped to invest in raw materials for weaving and increase her income potential.

Suphon's story

Suphon is a dedicated artisan and a mom from a rural village in Northern Thailand. She moved to her husband’s village eight years ago but struggled to find stable work. Just a few years ago, she began weaving hammocks alongside the women in her community and it quickly became a perfect fit for her lifestyle. With her husband working as a truck driver and often away, Suphon is the primary caretaker for their two young children. Working from home has been a game-changer, allowing her to contribute financially while being present for her family.

With the help of her first Kiva loan, Suphon was able to access raw materials to consistently produce hammocks and refine her craft. The steady income has provided much-needed financial stability, and she has grown both her confidence and skills as a weaver. She enjoys working with different colors and designs, preferring to weave the body of the hammock over making the scale lines and eyes. Winding the yarn onto the shuttles is also a task she enjoys, finding a rhythm in the work that makes it both productive and fulfilling.

Now, Suphon is seeking a new loan to build on her success. She plans to invest in more raw materials, expand her production, and further increase her income. With this next step, she hopes to create a sustainable future for her family while continuing to develop her skills as a hammock artisan.
