Jambar Yi Group's story

Aby, the woman sitting and holding a fruit tray in the photo, presides over the Jambar Yi group which means "the heroines". She is a forty-four-year-old retail trader and the mother of four children between the ages of three and thirteen years old, three of whom attend school. She is one of VisionFund Senegal's solvent clients and has been working in this sector for over five years.

Aby borrowed money from VisionFund Senegal to buy merchandise to build up her fruit sales and increase her income. She stocks up from wholesalers in her community and also in bigger cities and resells to the residents in her neighbourhood. The income she makes allows her to take care of her family's needs (health, food, education, hygiene etc.) The challenges she faces related to her business are: the high cost of merchandise, security, and a competitive market.
