A loan helped to buy more sacks of sugar, salt, cooking oil, and soft drinks.


Sumini's story

Sumini is 44 years old and lives in the town of Njeru in the Mukono region of Uganda. She is married and has four children who are all currently in school.

For the past 3 years, Sumini has been working hard to manage her retail shop, where she sells general merchandise items like sugar, salt, cooking oil, raw food and soft drinks. To help expand her business, Sumini has requested a loan of 1,200,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt, cooking oil, and soft drinks to sell. It will help Sumini to generate greater profits and repay back the loan in time and pay some of the household bills.

Sumini hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business to a bigger wholesaler and increase her savings.

She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program that primarily serves small group members like her who do not have collateral for commercial loans but do have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
