A loan helped a Des Moines based East African grocery store expand its offerings and better serve the community.

Zainab's story

I grew up in Somalia, life was not easy there. I ended up in a refugee camp in Uganda called Nakivale, where I met my future husband. In 2013, I was able to move to North Carolina, but it was hard to find a job. We then tried to move to North Dakota so my husband could work in the oil fields. During that time, I got pregnant and moved to Des Moines. Sadly, I had a miscarriage and decided to stay in Des Moines. After a while, I found a job and rented a house with my husband, who moved back.

In 2020, my husband got sick and was told he had cancer after being ill for over a year. In 2021, I went back to work after taking time off to take care of him. In 2022, we chose to open the grocery store to have more flexibility with my husband's treatments. Our future goals are to have enough money to deal with my husband's treatments and be our own bosses.

Through our store, we want to bring a taste of East African food to the people of Des Moines.
