A loan helped your Mexican-American neighbor share her traditional desserts with you and the city of Lincoln, NE!

Bia's story

Some of my earliest memories are of family celebrations filled with desserts, bright colors, and laughter. Susana, my mom, took every chance to celebrate us kids and our accomplishments.

Although we were happy, my family grew up poor. I’m not afraid to share this with you, because it shows that joy can be cultivated in any circumstance. I started to help my mom’s sister-in-law, my tia, when I was around eight years old. She was well-known in our neighborhood for making the most delicious gelatinas. These cakes are traditional for Mexican families and take hours to prepare and properly set up. It was in these moments with my tia that my love of sweetening the lives of others began.

In 2002, I moved to the United States to find a better life. I pushed myself through intense periods of loneliness and despair, and now I am blessed with a husband, two sons, and an American city that is my home. My love of sweets only grew stronger over the years, and my family and friends grew to expect my desserts at all of our best parties.

When COVID hit, my life radically changed. My mom suddenly passed away after contracting the coronavirus, and I grieved with my family from 2,000 miles away. The death of my mother resulted in a tremendous loss and also the birth of something new. In honor of my mom’s legacy, I started my own small business, Susa’s Sweets & Balloons, in 2021.

Susa’s Sweets & Balloons celebrates and honors hispanic heritage by creating custom dessert and event decor. We celebrate with our customers in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the surrounding area. With us, life is sweeter, and I invite you to join me as I expand my business to bring Susa’s love to every corner of my community.
