A loan helped this woman-owned business, Paleta Bar of Mesa, stay open and hire the help they need!

Maria Elena's story

I have spent more than 13 years working in cafeteria services and customer service. I always harbored a dream of owning my own business. As a mother of four daughters, I have faced monumental challenges, especially after leaving a domestic abusive relationship. This painful chapter in my life did not defeat me; on the contrary, it motivated me to fight harder for the well-being of my family and to achieve my dream of being an entrepreneur.

In 2021, I faced a new obstacle when my ex-partner reappeared with harassment and threats. Determined to protect my family, I moved to Arizona with the support of Enlace Comunitario, an organization in New Mexico that fights domestic violence. With a fresh start, I set out to make my dream a reality. However, resources were scarce and I accepted an investment offer from Roberto P., who became co-owner of my business. Unfortunately, Roberto treated me poorly and did not give me access to the accounting of the business, which made me feel even more alone and disoriented.

Seeking support, I asked for help from my daughter, who moved to Arizona to assist me. However, the situation became more complicated when my daughter and Roberto took me out of the business, using the money I obtained from the sale of my house to buy Roberto's share. With my daughter as co-owner, the conflicts did not stop. I took large sums of money to pay myself, leaving me with very little to support the business and my family.

In September, I could no longer take the abuse and paid my daughter $7,000 to leave, leaving me to run the business alone again, but now with depleted finances. Despite everything, I did not give up. I invested my last $2000 in the business to survive the winter, the hardest time for my store.

By the start of 2023, the store barely had $1000 in my account. There were times when I didn't even have enough money to cover expenses. But I remained determined to keep going and find a way to turn things around.
